Raquel Welch, The Age of Aquarius and Teotihuacan, Mexico

I discovered the following video on YouTube from, I believe, 1970 entitled “Raquel Welch – Aquarius and Let The Sun Shine In” and knew I had to share it in a blog post. These are the six reasons why:

1. I am a hippy at heart.

2. Two years ago, I went to see “Hair: The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical” in London’s West End with my friend, Dawn, and it was outrageously good. The two songs, “Aquarius” and “Let The Sun Shine In” are both sung in the musical.

3. In 1995, I travelled to Mexico on my own and went to see The Pyramids of the Sun and the Moon at Teotihuacan, where the video’s set.

4. Being an astrologer, I love the lyrics to “Aquarius”:

“When the moon is in the seventh house
And Jupiter aligns with Mars
Then peace will guide the planets
And love will steer the stars

This is the dawning of the age of Aquarius
The age of Aquarius, Aquarius, Aquarius”

5. Check out those zodiac star sign costumes, they’re magnificent. They appear very early on in the video.

6. What’s not to love about Raquel Welch looking gorgeous and dancing like a good ‘un.

So, make yourself a nice cup of tea, put your feet up, sit back and enjoy:

  1. ooo Sally thanks so much for sharing the music – as I read your post, the song started in my head – I expect I will be singing that song all day long – I remember it so well. I went to see that musical decades ago – must have been in the 70’s – when David Essex played the lead. It was fabulous and I loved it too.

    Great little video!

That simply has to be the theme tune for an Astrologer!

  2. You’re quick, Bianca!

Yes, isn’t it a fabulous video/song. I promise you’ll be singing it all day. I wrote the post yesterday and the songs are still going round in my head.

Just saw your tennis post on Twitter too – have responded. The challenge is on.

    best,
    Sally

  3. Oh Blimey, Sally. Now you are taking me back. I owned this single on 45rpm in the Sixties but not this version. A far superior musical version if I may say so by the fabulous Fifth Dimension. It was a double A side with Let the Sun Shine In. We used to listen to it over and over at boarding school on my portable Dansette record player. Gosh, how that dates me! And no regrets about that either I realise as I write.
Check this out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f0G8XJNz4bY – better musically, still a bit out there with the graphics, but not the great costumes I agree.
What an upbeat start to my day, well the Fifth Dimension version is upbeat.

  4. Loved it, Sally, thanks. Such was my enthusiasm I thought I’d try a few of Raquel’s final moves while tidying the kitchen. The impact was enormous, though I fear not in the same way as Raquel for the dog sought shelter under the kitchen table. But, hey, there’s nothing wrong with a girl expressing the joy within her soul, is there?

PS – Happy to report dog fully recovered!

    1. Yes, Raquel does rather go for it in a big way at the end of the video, doesn’t she?! Glad it got you moving even though you worried the dog! Lol.
      best wishes,
      Sally
