Inspired By Astrology Part 2: Pop Stars
The musical Hair was a product of the 60′s and it’s astrology anthem, ‘The Age of Aquarius’ epitomised the hippy era.
There are also plenty of songs and albums with planets/stars in the title: David Bowie ‘Life on Mars’, Pink Floyd ‘Dark Side of the Moon’, Jimi Hendrix ‘The Valleys of Neptune’ and Train ‘Drops of Jupiter’ to name a few.
Bjork may have been influenced by her hippy mother with her songs ‘Moon’ and ‘Pluto’ which presumably shaped Goldie’s decision, one-time lover of Bjork, to name his album ‘Saturnz Return’ after the 29 year cycle of the planet Saturn. This coming-of-age also inspired Gwen Stefani and No Doubt’s album title ‘Return of Saturn’.
Bryan Ferry’s ex-wife Lucy Helmore loved astrology which motivated him to write the song ‘Gemini Moon’ from the album ‘Mamouna’, whose original working title was ‘Horoscope’. And yes, Libran Bryan Ferry does have a Gemini Moon.
The video to Bloc Party’s ‘Mercury’ is rather disturbing but if you so desire, you can watch it here:
“Mercury, mercu-mercury’s in
Mercury’s in retrograde
This is not the time, the time to start a new love
This is not the time, the time to sign a lease”
..and finally who can resist a quick dance round the office or kitchen to Bananarama’s ‘Venus’? Go on, indulge yourself:
“Goddess on the mountain top
Burning like a silver flame
The summit of beauty and love
And Venus was her name”
